Duration: 13 Days

Activity: Camping/Tea House Trek

Difficulty: Hard

Max Altitude: 4200

The kingdom of Mustang is ancient and mystical and was only recently opened to foreigners ( 1988 ). Trekkers were restricted to the west side of the valley. It is now possible to trek to the east side and therefore makes this trek relatively new and unexplored route.

The trek begins with the customary trail from the west Kali Gandaki Valley to the walled city of Lo Manthang.Having explored this area, we make our through the villages of Dhi, Tange and Tetang to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath.Hermit caves may be observed on the en route and the 13th century cave Luri Monastery is one of the last remaining one.  We will either camp or stay in tea houses and our trek takes us upto picturesque plateaus, dramatic desert-like landscape with superb views of snow-capped peaks.

If our visit is scheduled for April-May, we will be fortunate to witness the Tiji festival of the proud Loba people of Mustang whose culture dates back to the 5th century AD. Rituals performed during this festival include colourful dances that involve expelling demons and are “shamanistic” in nature.
